UBT Newsletter
Jan-Mar 2012
Sunday, 4 - Today is first Sunday and many turned up to perform the meritorious deed of alms offering. They also benefitted from a good Dhamma talk by Ven. Devinda on “Mastering the Mind”. With the year end drawing near, the Newsletter team started busy on preparation of the next issue in January 2012. Work on the repainting of the exterior of the temple is also underway, hopefully all will be ready for the new year.
Sunday, 11 - Dr. Ang Beng Choo accepted our invitation to give Dhamma talk this Sunday. Her topic was “Are you a happy Buddhist”? It’s a good question for us to contemplate on and understand from the Dhamma talk what constitutes to a happy Buddhist, and if we are not what to do to be one.
Sunday/18 - Today’s talk was by Ven. Chun Zhi and she covered the last verse of the Mangala Sutta. She explained that with proper understanding of the Buddha’s Teaching and putting in great effort in practising we can bring our minds to a calm and concentrated state. When the mind reaches this level, iit becomes firm ans steadfast and unshaken and therefore will not be unaffected by worldly conditions. One is therefore free from sufferings caused by the 3 evil roots, subsequently peace and happiness arise, hence the highest blessing. She also advised that practising the Dhamma is a gradual process which takes time and effort. There is no short cut. It is a way to bring the mind home and stop it from wondering under the influence of the 3 evil roots.
The Abbot covered a little on the subject while waiting for Ven. Chun Zhi’s arrival. He said that once we understand the 38 Blessings, we will know that they are right here for us to receive them and there’s no need to look elsewhere for them. The Buddha had explained them very clearly and following the guide one can possess the blessings. He said that the most important/foundation of the practice is in the first verse - not to associate with foolish people, to associate with the wise. By foolish, here meant someone who does not understand the Dhamma, could not tell right from wrong and the Four Noble Truths. Wise does not mean intelligent. Wise people are those who understand and realize Dhamma. Only such people have the quality to lead others to righteousness.

Sunday, 25 - It was a wonderful way to end the last Sunday of the year with a Dhamma talk by Ven. Rathanasara. Venerable shared his knowledge on “Misused Terms”. The talk was too good to summarize for risk of leaving out any important points, therefore for the benefits of those who unfortunately did not attend, we have attached the complete record of the talk. Please click here.
Everyone is reminded of the New Year Eve midnight chanting this Saturday/31 at 11.30 p.m. To usher in a brand new year of 2012 and to radiate metta to all beings. There’s no other better way to end an old year. It was auspiciously coincidental that the First Sunday of the Year falls on New Year Day/1 January. Devotees are blessed with the opportunity of starting the year with performance of meritorious deeds and healthy mental cultivation.
Sunday, 31 - Year 2011 ends wonderfully with a night chanting from 2011 through to 2012. Enthusiastic devotees turned up for the evening chanting which started at 11.30 p.m. and went on to past midnight. The Sangha members led devotees to chanting of parittas to usher in a happy and peaceful 2012. It was an impressive crowd.
Tomorrow is First Sunday, not only of the month but the year. Therefore, it is an auspicious opportunity to perform meritorious deed, such as alms offering and listening to Dhamma talk at UBT. Hopefully, many will recognize this treasure and turn up.
